Shaila Karkera graduated from Bombay University with a master's in Biochemistry and has a Diploma in Business administration.

She is the current Chair and Founding board member of the Indian Community Fund for Greater Memphis. She was involved with the installation of the Gandhi exhibit at the National Civil Rights Museum. She cordinated, and was involved with the design and installation of the Windows to the World, an interactive children's exhibit at the Children's museum of Memphis. |

She serves on the Executive Board of The Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis where she chaired Grants and helped develop Grant making proceedures for the foundation.. She serves on the Executive Board of Bridges, and on the Board of the National Civil Rights Museum. Past Board affiliations include St. Mary's Episcopal School and Memphis in May.

She was honored at the 2007 Women's Foundation Annual Tribute luncheon as a Woman of Honor.

She currently lives in Memphis with her husband, Mohan Karkera, who is a Pediatric Anesthesiologist at LeBonheur Children's Hospital. They have two daughters.
Her hobbies include gardening and painting.
