The ICFGM was established three years ago to fund organizations that are aligned with the values and philosophy of strong families, education and diversity. Windows to the World, with its many different educational components, was a way for the ICFGM to promote cultures from different regions of the world.. |
|
Windows to the World is an interactive, educational, fun-filled exhibit area that helps children explore the world. It became a permanent part of the resident exhibit, Your House, My House, on November 20, 2004, when it opened to the public. The exhibit was funded by ICFGM. |
|
The exhibit has several hands-on, interactive components:
In the Travel Center visitors use a computer program to “travel” to six other countries to see what celebrations, games, homes and traditions are like in other parts of the world. |
|
- Children build a table-top ger to find out about mobile houses used by herding people in Mongolia.
- The beautiful art of rangoli is experienced by children as they see traditional ways of decorating outside the home in India. Families also dress up in traditional Indian clothing.
- Visitors “prepare” foods traditional to French Guyana against the backdrop of a communal house known as la maloca.
- Families play a game of Nine Men Morris, which was played in ancient Egypt.

“The India Association of Memphis was instrumental in getting this exhibit produced,” said Judy Caldwell, CMOM executive director. “We worked very closely with the Indian community in Memphis to make this exhibit a reality. It is a wonderful addition to the museum.” |
The exhibit is sponsored by the Indian Community Fund for Greater Memphis (ICFGM). |
